What is the Study Abroad Photo Contest?
It's a contest for students to show-off their photographs taken abroad.

What's the point?
We want to encourage serious photography among our traveling undergraduates, help students see their new surroundings more deeply and create a photographic record of Chicago programs and Chicago students abroad.  Besides, its fun!

Who can take part in this contest?
Students must be University of Chicago undergraduates engaged in some serious academic or career-related activity. This licenses quite a bit--Chicago programs abroad, non-Chicago programs abroad, Chicago-supported language study abroad, independent study at a foreign university, a foreign internship or paid work experience, a research project abroad leading to a paper at Chicago. It does not though license vacation travel abroad.

Can I submit photos that were taken in other locations during my travels?
Yes! For example, a participant in one of Chicago's programs in Paris could submit a photo taken in Rome.

How many photos may I submit?
A maximum of four.

What kind of photos should I submit?
We would like the photos to be of the non-American locale. A still life of an apple on a table with bare-wall background wouldn't really meet this quasi-requirement.

Some past winners have demonstrated subtle darkroom or Photoshop work; others have been developed and printed commercially. Some have been the products of technically advanced cameras; others have had far more modest origins. Some have been "high art"; others more in the greeting card vein. Some have had a narrative quality or social resonance; others just look good. The "looking good" aspect is important of course, though this is a pretty slippery concept.

In general the winning photos have been well composed and well focused (or deliberately out of focus for artistic effect), and the scenes captured have usually been unambiguously out-of-the-country. But there's an exception to every rule, and indeed the exceptional rules. Be thoughtful, be creative, have fun. Send us some photos, and see what happens.

What is the prize?
The cash prizes are $350, $250, and $150 for first, second, and third prizes respectively. There may also be one or more "honorable mentions," but no money would be connected with those.  There is also the fame. We will try to display or publish-again, with proper attribution-the more impressive photographs.

What is the required format of the submission?
Prints should be 8 by 10 inches or larger, un-mounted.  Photo’s can be in color, black-and-white, glossy or matte. Submitted photos become the property of the College, which will enjoy full rights of display and reproduction.  Submit your print with the Photo Contest Entry Form by the specified deadline.
