Eligibility

The study abroad eligibility requirements vary from program to program. You will find them on the individual program web pages. In general, the university-based programs (Berlin, Bologna, Paris, Seville, but not of course the British/Irish programs) require at least two-years of college-level instruction in the approprite language. The intensive language programs will generally require one year or two quarters of elementary-level instruction in the target language. The civilization-based programs carry no language requirement although your application will be strengthened by some study of the appropriate language. You must be in good academic standing to take part in Chicago's programs abroad. If you are a transfer student you are eligible to take part in these programs, but your participation in a program does not count toward the College's six-quarter/eighteen-course minimum residency requirement. does provide some evidence of the kind of resourcefulness and seriousness you will need abroad, you should present a transcript showing solid and consistent work. The applications for all programs feature some sort of statement of purpose; you should approach the writing of this with care and introspection. For certain programs you will be asked to secure one or more letters of recommendation. If you are applying to one of the year-long university-based programs, you are required to have a conference with one of the directors of study abroad. For other applicants such a conference is recommended, though not mandatory.
