Notes: All charges, except for the study abroad administrative fee are billed by and paid to the University of Chicago Bursar. For one-quarter programs the charges are applied solely to that quarter’s bill. For academic-year programs the study abroad administrative fee is billed in the first quarter of the program only. Participants in Chicago-sponsored programs abroad are not charged Chicago’s activities and health fees during the quarters of their participation.
Participants in these programs remain fully registered at Chicago and retain their financial aid eligibility. The College is committed to making these programs available to all its students
1Tuition (Per Qtr)- This fee is the tuition charge per quarter. Tuition is set either by the University of Chicago or by the program provider.
2Tuition (Full Prog)- This fee is the total tuition charge for the program for the academic year. Tuition is set either by the University of Chicago or by the program provider.
3Study Abroad Administrative Fee- This fee represents the non-refundable study abroad administrative fee that is used to help fund the Study Abroad Office for the 2008-09 academic year. This is a one-time charge regardless of the length of the program. Once admitted to the program students are expected to sign an Admission Acceptance form and submit it along with the study abroad administrative fee.
4Program Fee- The program fee includes operational expenses during your time abroad. Please note that this does not include all the expenses you will experience living abroad, such as transportation to and from the program site, books, miscellaneous costs, interim travel, and, in programs not providing them, accommodation and meals. The program fee includes what is specified in the ‘Program Fees Include’ column. All programs are different. See below for a list of program fee descriptions:
Accommodation- Housing including dormitories, hotels or home-stays depending upon your program.
Partial board- This includes some meals. Check with the Study Abroad Program Coordinator for more detailed information.
Instruction- University of Chicago faculty salaries are paid by the College; the instruction component of the program fee contributes to faculty airfare, housing and per diem.
Student support- Each group of undergraduates is accompanied by a graduate student who assists with courses, excursions and student needs.
Program excursions- Expenses associated with program excursions can include accommodation, guides, transportation, entry costs for museums and attractions and some meals.
5Cancellation/Withdrawal Policy- If you cancel or withdrawal from a University of Chicago program for any reason, you will not be reimbursed for any expenses. Additionally, the following programs are managed by a study abroad provider that will charge a cancellation or withdrawal fee in the event you cannot complete the program. Click on the city below for specific information on each program’s withdrawal or cancellation policy.
Barcelona Academic Year (Consortium for Advanced Studies in Barcelona (CASB)
Berlin (Berlin Consortium for German Studies (BCGS)
Beijing (CET Academic Programs)
Bologna (Bologna Consortial Studies Program (BCSP)-
Withdrawal after March 31st and before August arrival date as printed in the Bologna handbook: $500
Withdrawal between August arrival date and September 30th: $1,000
Withdrawal between October 1st and December 31st: $4,700
Withdrawal after January 11th: $6,045Kyoto (Kyoto Center for Japanese Studies (KCJS)
St. Petersburg (Bard College)- The withdrawal policy for Bard College is outlined in their program handbook. A summary of the policy is listed below. For full details, refer to your Bard program handbook.
No refunds will be made except as herein specified. In no event is the $500 deposit [that is made to Bard College] refundable. In all situations, the student must submit a completed application for withdrawal, available from IILE staff, to the Program Manager and the Dean of International Studies, Bard College. The date of final processing of the withdrawal application will determine if a refund will be given and the amount. Any refund applies to program tuition only; airfare and housing costs will not be refunded (except as stated below), as the Program must pay for these expenses in advance of the semester. Student transcripts will reflect withdrawal in correlation to the withdrawal policies stated in the Academic Policies section of the program handbook.
If withdrawal from the program is official before the first day of orientation in St. Petersburg for the semester in question, a full refund of all program tuition less the $500 nonrefundable deposit fee is given. For students who have commenced study in the program, calculated from the first day of orientation in St. Petersburg, if the withdrawal occurs during the first two weeks of the program, 80 percent of the tuition will be refunded; if it occurs within four weeks, 30 percent of the tuition. No tuition is refunded for withdrawal after four weeks from the start date of the program. No fees are refunded if the withdrawal takes place after the first two weeks of the program. There is no refund of payments for dormitory housing. Students living in host families are responsible for payment for the entire month in which the withdrawal takes place.
No refund (including the $500 deposit fee) is made in cases of suspension or expulsion, except in instances where a student is eligible for a pro rata refund of federal financial aid, as determined by the federal government.
Botswana and Tanzania (Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM)- No refunds will be made for students who cancel or withdraw from an ACM program. Additionally students will be charged a cancellation or withdrawal fee.
6Tuition for ACM programs- Because the ACM-sponsored programs run for one semester, the tuition for these programs equals one-half of Chicago's full-year tuition plus a $125 ACM fee.
