For an increasing number of students in the College,
a period of serious study abroad has become an essential and valued
part of their Chicago education. Every year these students make their
way to a variety of foreign cities-to Berlin, Oaxaca, Bologna, Toledo,
Athens, Cape Town, Kyoto, Paris, and others-there to study at a local
university, to perfect their knowledge of a language, or to study
a civilization at its center. Apart from the academic component of
these ventures, an extended period of time abroad offers a cultural
immersion, an opportunity to examine habits and attitudes different
from, sometimes inimical to, those at home. Participants in Chicago's
programs abroad accept challenges different from those on campus.
They return to Hyde Park with a larger view of the world, a wider
