Autumn Paris Program
Please note: Study
abroad programs sponsored by the undergraduate College of the University
of Chicago are open to University of Chicago students only. Applications
from outside the University are not accepted.
The College of the University of Chicago offers
the Autumn Paris Program for Chicago undergraduates who have taken elementary
French or who have comparable credit by examination. It is devoted to
intensive French language instruction at the intermediate level. Students
receive daily instruction in French and observe a no-English rule. They
also take a course in art history, which is itself a language exercise,
taught in French at the appropriate level. Apart from the classroom
work the Autumn Paris Program features a number of guided excursions
to sites both within Paris and in the environs. Paris itself, the glittering
French capital and a cultural center of unrivaled importance, is of
course a key element in this program, and it is assumed that students
will come to know the city well during the ten weeks of the Program.
As a participant in the Autumn Paris Program you
live in the Fondation des Etats-Unis,
a residence hall in the Cité Internationale Universitaire, a campus-like
assemblage of houses for international students. Most program participants
will live in single rooms.
You receive a total of four credits (equals 400
units) for your work in this program. You receive three credits for
the intermediate French language sequence (French 201, 202, and 203),
which is compressed into the ten weeks of autumn quarter, as well as
a credit for the French art history course, which runs at a normal pace
through the term. After completing this program you may qualify for
the College's Language Certificate by taking, in the wake of the Program,
an advanced French language or literature course on campus and passing
a special French language certification examination.
You remain registered full-time in the College and
pay regular College tuition, the Autumn Paris Program fee, and the College's
study abroad administrative fee. The Program fee covers accommodation
and some excursion costs.
You retain their financial aid eligibility. However,
two expenses-the study abroad administrative fee and the round-trip
airfare to Paris-are not underwritten by College Financial Aid. On the
other hand, since you cannot be expected to work part-time while in
Paris, the self-help component of your financial aid package does not
include a term-time employment factor.
The Autumn Paris Program is designed for undergraduates
who have take French 101, 102, and 103 (or 121 and 103) or have comparable
credit by examination. You must be in good standing and beyond your
first year in the College to participate in this program. Naturally
the chief criterion for judging your application to this program is
the quality of your work in French (if you have taken French at Chicago).
Apart from this you should present a solid academic record in general
and demonstrate the kind of maturity that is necessary to participate
successfully in a study abroad program.
Applications to Chicago study abroad programs are
available on the web. To apply to the Autumn Paris Program you submit
a general study abroad application electronically, then download the
supplementary application specific to this program and submit it on
paper normally in late winter quarter of the previous academic year.
If you accept an offer of admission you are expected to secure your
place with a deposit equivalent to the study abroad administrative fee.
