Elective Courses for Winter 2006

History of Paris (HIST 12301)
( Steven Sawyer, University of Chicago )

The aim of this course is to trace the various meanings of Paris from ancient times to the present. The course problematizes the notion of the “history of the city” by suggesting that such an approach overlooks the complexity inherent in a historical inquiry into Paris . Rather, Paris , in this course, is understood as a series of complementary and competing relationships which I have titled city, capital, and center. The history of Paris cannot be told as the history of any one of these definitions but must be understood as a dialogue between them.

Human Rights and World Politics (PBPL 27705)
(Catherine Götze, Peace Research Institute of Frankfurt )

This course will investigate both the history and the current state of human rights, taking the tradition of the Enlightenment and the heritage of the French and American Revolutions as starting points. It will treat the diffusion of the idea of human rights and of the rights themselves and consider the political connection between human rights and democracy. Within established democratic states, human rights remain a driving force for the continuous process of inclusion of all persons into citizenship. They have also served as a legitimating basis for a people’s right of self-determination and independence.

European Corporate Strategy (ECON 28301)
(Jean-Marie Chevalier and Alexandre Rattle, Dauphine -- University of Paris IX)

The degree of regulation of industrial markets in Europe will be examined, along with initiatives toward deregulation and the role of the European commission. Some areas for focused attention include deregulation in the UK , and the information and network technology industries.

European Macroeconomics/Money (ECON 23300)
(André Lévy-Lang and Florence Legros , Dauphine -- University of Paris IX)

This course introduces the macroeconomy of Europe. Topics to be covered include monetary policy and national budgets, challenges facing the European Central Bank and the euro.
