In consultation with the University’s Pandemic Travel Review Committee, Study Abroad is selectively resuming many of our faculty-led and direct enrollment programs, taking into account travel logistics, any testing and quarantine requirements, the local COVID-19 and health care environment, the programmatic structure, our on-site facilities and support networks, and what contingency plans are available. Students who are enrolled in an Autumn 2021 program who have questions about their particular location should contact their Program Manager for more information.

Given the expected continuation of the global pandemic and its impact on international activity, the University is suspending our Paris-based Summer 2021 undergraduate Study Abroad programs. This decision was made in conjunction with program faculty, our colleagues at the University of Chicago Center in Paris, and University leadership.
We are working with the 2021 recipients of Summer International Travel Grants to determine if a small number of students may be able to move forward with their plans for language study or research abroad. In addition, the recipients have been given the option to defer their grant to next summer or to use the grant for remote language courses or research (pending approval of their revised proposal).

Due to the ongoing impacts of COVID-19, the College will not be running any faculty-led programs abroad in Spring Quarter 2021. A few students who are directly enrolled in programs at partner universities abroad are continuing their participation in their programs through the end of the academic year.
So that some students will still have the opportunity to fulfill their Civilization Studies requirement in a single quarter, the College will be offering the following Spring 2021 courses remotely, rather than in the originally planned international locations. Students may register for these courses directly. Please note that study abroad civilizations courses may NOT be combined with on-campus civilizations courses to meet the Civilization Studies Core requirement.
Barcelona: Civilization in the Western Mediterranean (in Spanish)
Open to all College students who meet the course pre-requisites. Pre-requisite: Completion of Spanish 20400, 20500, or a literature course (Spanish 21100, 21500, or above). Courses will be taught remotely.
Hong Kong: Colonizations
Open to all College students. Courses will be taught remotely.
Jerusalem in Middle Eastern Civilizations
Open to all College students. Two courses will be taught remotely.
Paris: European Civilization
Open to all College students. Courses will be taught remotely.
Paris: Russian Civilization
Open to all College students. Courses will be taught remotely.

While the College will not be running any of the Winter 2021 faculty-led programs in their international locations, faculty in three programs have been able to reconfigure their courses into remote offerings. The three programs are Civilization in the Western Mediterranean, European Civilization, and Middle Eastern Civilizations (originally planned for Barcelona, Paris, and Rabat, respectively).
We aim to make decisions about our Spring 2021 faculty-led programs in January. Each program will be evaluated on an individual basis in consultation with the program faculty, local partners, and University leadership.
A small number of students are planning to participate in the College’s direct enrollment programs in Winter and Spring 2021.

In response to the current impacts of COVID-19, and with the health and safety of our community in mind, the University of Chicago is suspending our Paris-based Summer 2020 undergraduate Study Abroad programs.
Our decision is informed by travel restrictions and government-issued stay-at-home orders in both the United States and France – which currently cover most of both countries. While such measures may be eased in the coming months, the uncertainty combined with the need to plan our summer programming well in advance make it untenable to move forward with our summer programming as designed.
The University remains deeply committed to international education and Study Abroad is working directly with students affected by this decision to provide support and guidance.
We are continuing to plan for Autumn 2020 programs with a longer-term view toward Winter and Spring 2021.

In response to the current spread and impact of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), as a precautionary measure to maintain the health and safety of our community, the University of Chicago has suspended all Spring Quarter 2020 faculty-led undergraduate Study Abroad programs. Our actions take into account the latest CDC guidance for international travel and study abroad programs.
The decision reflects the University’s interest in preventing exposure to the virus and the need for faculty and students to navigate unpredictable circumstances overseas, such as access to healthcare, disruptions to local services, and the potential for travel interruptions or restrictions. In addition, given the intensive block schedule of faculty-led Study Abroad programs, logistical disruptions could require mid-course changes to the nine-week Spring program. Suspending the program prioritizes the health and well-being of our University community members and supports the academic integrity of the Spring Quarter.
We are working on a case-by-case basis with students who are currently abroad on direct enrollment programs.
The University of Chicago remains deeply committed to international education, and planning remains underway for Study Abroad programs in Summer 2020 and beyond. In light of the current COVID-19 impact on nations worldwide, our office will continue to closely monitor developments regarding health and safety over the coming months. We understand there is uncertainty about feasibility of travel and questions remain about how long COVID-19 will impact international mobility, which is impossible to know at this time. We expect to proceed with all our usual planning efforts for programs scheduled during Summer and Autumn 2020 quarters, with a longer-term view toward Winter and Spring 2021.
