Scholarships & Grants

There are a number of funding opportunities beyond Financial Aid to help students cover study abroad-related costs.

  • Every year the College awards approximately 100 Summer International Travel Grants to support outstanding undergraduates for intensive language study or research abroad.
  • The College Center for Research and Fellowships website provides a database of various forms of funding specific to study abroad, such as the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, the Critical Languages Scholarships, the Boren Scholarship, and many more.

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides up to $5,000 to students of limited financial means to study abroad. Applicants must be US citizens, in good academic standing, receiving Federal Pell grants, and applying to a study abroad program that is eligible for credit at UChicago.

Application deadlines are in early March and early October for students participating in study abroad programs 6-12 months in the future. Check out our Gilman UChicago Resources and Support for application assistance.
