Withdrawal Policy

Withdrawal requests must be submitted in writing to the Office of Study Abroad. (In addition, students will be required to submit a Study Abroad Withdrawal Form on the Via TRM website.) Withdrawals are final and cannot be reversed. Participants who cancel or withdraw from a University of Chicago Study Abroad program for any reason will not be reimbursed for any expenses, including the nonrefundable administrative fee.

From the time of admission acceptance, Study Abroad begins making program arrangements on behalf of participants, including student housing, excursions, local language instruction, and many other preparations. Late withdrawals will be assessed the remaining balance of the administrative fee as well as a portion of the Study Abroad Program Fee according to the schedule below. Please note that these fees generally represent only a portion of costs already incurred on a student’s behalf.

Unpaid Study Abroad fees, including withdrawal fees, may result in a registration hold. Students who have been placed on hold will not be able to register for courses nor access University services and facilities until their financial obligations or compliance with rules and regulations have been fulfilled.

    Program Fees

    • The tuition refund schedule for study abroad follows the same schedule as on campus:

      • 50% of tuition is refunded if a student withdraws by the end of the fourth week of the quarter
      • 30% of tuition is refunded if a student withdraws by the end of the fifth week of the quarter
      • 0% of tuition is refunded if a student withdraws at the beginning of the sixth week of the quarter or later.
