Academic Year 2026–27

Explore study abroad opportunities still available for next year: Sixteen Thematic programs in Paris, London, Hong Kong, and Barcelona and two Intensive Language programs in Toledo, Spain.

UChicago faculty-led thematic programs offer a range of courses across disciplines, some of which meet major, minor, or general education requirements. Participants also take a fourth course in the local language.

Thematic Programs and Ranking Alternates: Students should apply to their first-choice Autumn, Winter, and/or Spring thematic programs and, if interested, may rank alternate thematic programs from the same quarter within their applications.

Autumn 2026 Thematic and Language Programs

London: British Literature and Culture

Study British literature and culture in London with UChicago English department faculty. Next autumn’s courses are: On Coziness, Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group, Sex and Skullduggery in the City: Staging Early Modern London, and an independent study course.

Paris: Inequality and Global Social Development

Taught by faculty in the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, the program aims to provide students with an understanding of inequality and social development policy and practice in a globalized world.

Paris: Neuroscience

Take two Neuroscience courses and one Psychology course taught by UChicago faculty in Paris. Next autumn’s offerings are: Spinal Cord and Brainstem Neuroanatomy & Disability; Sensation and Perception; and Structure, Circuits, and Development of the Forebrain.

Paris: Visual Arts (Arts Core)

New program! The Autumn Visual Arts program is open to DoVA majors, minors, as well as other undergraduate students at all levels interested in engaging the rich cultural history of Paris through interacting, observing, discussion, and hands-on making and learning.

Toledo: Intermediate or Advanced Spanish

Study Spanish intensively in a completely Spanish-speaking environment. The Toledo program offers an Intermediate track and an Advanced track. In the Intermediate track, the Spanish Art course may count toward the College’s Arts Core requirement.

Winter 2027 Thematic Programs

Hong Kong: Global Studies

Learn more about the transdisciplinary field of global studies through a sequence of three courses that will cover the theoretical foundations of the field, analyze empirical cases, and provide methodological grounding for independent projects.

London: Democracy (Social Sciences Core)

Take three courses in the SOSC Core sequence—Democracy’s Life and Death; Democracy, Revolutions, and Constitutions; and Challenges of Modern Democracies—and an independent study course.

Paris: Cinema and Media Studies (Arts Core)

Explore the study of film and related media in Paris. This program is open to students of all majors and includes two courses that can be used to satisfy the general education arts requirement.

Paris: Economics

The program is designed for students who have completed the core courses in the Economics major and want to learn further the methods and applications of economics in specific areas such as experimental economics, money and banking, and finance/strategic thinking.

Paris: Global Health

The program features a sequence of three courses focused on epidemiology, microbiology, and the broader social, political, and economic forces that shape global health issues.

Spring 2027 Thematic Programs

Barcelona: Public Policy

Study comparative public policy with UChicago Harris faculty in Barcelona. Discover how Spain and the European Union as a whole have approached common policy challenges.

Paris: Astronomy (Physical Sciences Core)

Take a three-course sequence on foundational topics in theoretical and observational astronomy to satisfy the general education requirement or as part of the Minor in Astronomy and Astrophysics program.

Paris: Human Rights

Explore the intersection of human rights and the city’s rich history and culture. Courses are taught by faculty from the Pozen Family Center For Human Rights.

Paris: Mathematics

Further your math studies, intensively and in the company of a small group of like-minded students, in Paris.

Paris: Philosophy

Devote a spring quarter to the study of philosophy at the University of Chicago’s Center in Paris.

Paris: Psychology

Take three psychology courses in Paris with UChicago faculty. Psychology majors are encouraged to apply, though the program is open to students of all majors.

Paris: Urbanism

The Urbanism sequence integrates three disciplinary approaches: the history of cities, the theoretical basis of urban dynamics, and the normative understanding of cities as objects of planning and design.

Note about Winter and Spring Application Deadlines: Winter and Spring thematic programs typically have an early deadline and a late deadline. We encourage interested students to apply by the first deadline (April 20)—your chances of admission are increased by doing so.
